Modern Colonial Kitchen

I don’t usually showcase my projects other than the full service design, but here we are! I recently completed a spacial design project for a kitchen in marblehead and loved how it was modern and fresh with a nod to the colonial homes historic elements. Our designs all have one thing in common - no matter the style or feel of the space, they all have a clean minimalist approach.

Discovery: GOAL

We always start off by defining the clients big picture goal, sometimes it’s obvious and sometimes it comes with several obstacles. In this case, the big picture goal was simply to expand the kitchen into an adjacent room.

Discovery: CHALLENGES

Often times when clients come to me for spacial design help they have already tried to attempt a DIY design approach but hit a roadblock (or a few). Then we got into the challenges… the adjacent room was done by the previous home owner with a concrete foundation, making it difficult and costly to run any plumbing lines past the existing foundation area. The existing window sil in the adjacent room was lower than your typical counter height, and the clients were taller (remember is a colonial style home so height issues are common). Lastly, the entry door was dead center on what would hopefully be the kitchen cabinet wall and needed to be moved. The second two challenges were not nearly as difficult to fix as the first, but still things to consider in the cost of the design.

LAYOUT

As our design process goes, the next step was to get into layout. We started off by presenting 3 general layouts to get an idea of the shape of the kitchen before getting into locations. You’ll see a skinny table island, double peninsula, and a horseshoe with a single peninsula - we ended up selecting a modified horseshoe to move on.

STYLE

The clients wanted to take the spacial design one step further and get a feel for the overall look and feel of the space. Another challenge for them was wanting the kitchen to look new but also in tune with the colonial architecture of the home, hence modern colonial! We created a moodboard to show our ideal finishes for all the basic selections needed in a kitchen: counter, cabinet color/style, hardware, backsplash, accent shelving, window treatment, and lighting.
